The sunbeam snake, also known as Xenopeltis, is the sole genus of the monotypic family Xenopeltidae. This species is native to Southeast Asia and is known for its iridescent scales. The name "sunbeam" is given to this snake because of how its scales shine and reflect under the sun. They can grow up to 51 inches in length and spend most of their time hidden. Sunbeams only emerge at dusk to hunt frogs, small mammals and other snakes. Since they are not venomous, they kill their prey through constriction. In addition, unlike other snakes, they possess two lungs instead of just one.
Throughout history, snakes have gained a lot of symbolism for both 'good' and 'evil' concepts.
